Roswell Reads: Saturday Scoreboard, A Book Discussion

Join us for the last Roswell Reads 2010 book discssion.  On Saturday, March 6th @ 2:00 p.m., Dana Barrett, former owner of Buy the Book Coffee Shop and now with Better World Books, will host a discussion of Outcasts United:  A Refugee Soccer Team, An American Town by Warren St. John at the Roswell Library.

Roswell Reads: Soccer for Dummies

Wondering what to do this weekend?  Never fear - the Roswell Library has you covered.  On Saturday @ 2:00 p.m., attend an informative panel discussion on Youth In Sports.  The panel includes some popular Roswell area figures:  Leo Barker (head football coach at Roswell High School and former NFL player), Sue Scheer (head LAX coach at Roswell High School), Jim Farmer (Umpire Crew Chief for Roswell High School), and former NFL player Kalimba Edwards.

Then, come back to the library Sunday afternoon @ 2:00 p.m. to learn everything you ever wanted to know about soccer, but were afraid to ask.  Bob Rumble from Roswell High School will lead this discussion on Soccer for Dummies.

K1 Book Club Meets March 2nd @ 4:00 p.m.

DON'T FORGET!  The K1 Book Club meets next Tuesday.  The K1 Book Club is a book discussion group for children in kindergarten and 1st grade. At the meeting, participants will read a book together and do activities related to the book. No advance preparation is needed!  Just show up and have a good time.   Reservations are recommended and may be made in person or by calling the Roswell Library at 770.640.3075.

Free Blood Pressure Testing at the Roswell Library - March 1st

The Roswell Library, along with North Fulton Hospital, will offer free blood pressure testing on Monday, March 1st from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  If you are in the Roswell area (or anywhere else), please stop by and take care of your health.  No appointment is necessary.  For directions, please call the Roswell Library at 770.640.3075.

Calling All Teddy Bears! A Stuffed Animal Sleepover @ the Library

DON'T FORGET!  On Monday, March 1 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Roswell Library, you and your stuffed animal are cordially invited for an evening story time. After the stories, the stuffed animals will stay for a sleepover where they'll play games, tell stories and have fun. You can pick up your buddy the next day after 10:00 a.m. Each child will take home a picture of their stuffed animal having fun during the sleepover. Please be sure you can sleep without your stuffed animal for the night.  This program is for ages 3 - 8.

Roswell Reads: Soccer Clinics for Kids

The Roswell Reads 2010 series of events and activities continues to inspire and delight!  Coming up soon are a couple of soccer clinics.  Both clinics will be taught by Roswell High School varsity players.  And, both clinics will be held at Waller Park Extension, Lower Field.

Soccer Clinic I (Ages 6 - 10)

Roswell Reads: Journalism Today

Join us on Tuesday evening, March 2nd @ 7:00 p.m. for a unique look at the world of journalism today.  Journalists will share perspectives from the fields of sportswriting, editorials, and freelancing.   Presenters will include two editors from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Ray Cox (Sports Editor) and Shawn McIntosh (Public Editor), and free lance writer Marcia Killingsworth.

This year's Roswell Reads selection is: Outcasts United: A Refugee Soccer Team, an American Town by Warren St. John.  Mr. St. John is a reporter for the New York Times.

Roswell Roots Presents: Author Ted Dunagan

Join us Saturday morning, February 27 @ 11:00 a.m. for our last Roswell Roots program. Local author Ted Dunagan will discuss his book The Yellow Watermelon. Mr. Dunagan was named Georgia Author of the Year by the Georgia Writer's Association.

This program is part of the Roswell Roots Celebration of African American History and the Atlanta Author Series.

Members of the North Fulton Drama Club will present a fun workshop at the library on Thursday, February 25 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Learn the techniques to perform a great monologue: character development, memorization skills, presentation and performance. This program is recommended for ages 14 - 19.

In Memoriam: Author and Poet Lucille Clifton

Sad news to report today:  author and poet Lucille Clifton passed away Saturday, 13 February.  She was 73 years old and had recently been in the hospital.  Formerly the Poet Laureate of Maryland - and the first African American woman to do so, a National Book Award winner and a recipient of  prestigious Ruth Lilly Prize for lifetime achievement by the Poetry Foundation,  Ms. Clifton wrote a wonderful series of children's book about Everett Anderson.  Her poetry and literature will be greatly missed.   Please visit the links below to learn more about this great African American writer and why she is so beloved.

In Memoriam: Author Dick Francis

Prolific author and former Royal jockey Dick Francis has died at the age of 89.  It just so happens that the Mystery Readers' Book Club is reading his book Field of Thirteen at the February 23rd book discussion.  What timing.  Here are a couple of links to obituaries so readers can learn more about this humble Welshman.

REMINDER: Roswell Roots Presents a Screening of the Film "Traces of the Trade ..."


What would it be like to learn that your ancestors were part of the largest slave-trading family in American history?  Shocking, troubling, disturbing, horrifying - all these things and more.  Katrina Browne learned this very fact about her family and made a documentary about it.  Join us at the Roswell Library for two screenings of her film Traces of the Trade:  Stories from the Deep North.  The documentary follows Ms. Browne and nine family members as they retrace the Slave Trade Triangle and her New England ancestors' involvement in that trade.

Are you looking for a book club for your 2nd or 3rd grader?  Look no more because  the Roswell Library has the club for you!  Angie Whelchel has been leading the Reading Pals Book Club for several years now and kids love it.  She always knows the right books to choose and the right activities to share.  This month, the selection is Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel by Nikki Grimes.  Join us Tuesday, February 16th @ 4:00 p.m. as Miss Angie leads another fun-filled Reading Pals book discussion.  Copies of the book are available for check-out.  Reservations are appreciated and may be made in person or over the phone by calling the library at 770-640-3075.

Roswell Reads Presents: What's It All About? Refugee Resettlement Agencies and Their Work

Our Roswell Reads programming season kicks off tonight, Feb. 8th, at 7:00 p.m. Join us for an informative discussion presented by Paedia Mixon of Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta (RRISA).

What better time than this, considering the tragic earthquakes in Haiti, to learn what's involved in placing refugees into new homes.  Some Haitans will move to other countries around the world, including the U.S.

You'll also learn what the soccer team members in Outcasts United... have gone through and you'll come away with a better understanding of their lives.

Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta is a non-profit agency with a multi-lingual, multicultural staff that provides an entry into the American culture and continued services for hundreds of refugees each year. The Pinkney Family Dynasty


Fans of children's literature will enjoy this recent article in USA Today about author/illustrator Jerry Pinkney and his family.  Mr. Pinkney recently won the American Library Association's Caldecott Medal (an annual award given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children) for his book The Lion and The Mouse.  Mr. Pinkney, along with his wife Gloria, son and daughter-in-law Brian and Gloria, and son and daughter-in-law Myles and Sandra, has created a literary dynasty rich with more than 175 titles between them.  Not to be outdone, there are two other Pinkney children also in the arts fields.  Click here to read about these talented authors and illustrators and their family.  Photo by Robert Deutsch, USA Today.

The BIG READ and the ATL

The BIG READ is a nationwide reading program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.  The 2010 selection for metro Atlanta is the classic novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.  The program officially launches February 17th with a kick-off at the Margaret Mitchell House in midtown Atlanta.  Other programs will be held around the city, including at the DeKalb County Public Library in Decatur.

Roswell Reads Presents: What's It All About? Refugee Resettlement Agencies and Their Work

Our Roswell Reads programming season kicks off next Monday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m. Join us for an informative discussion presented by Paedia Mixon of Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta (RRISA). Learn what's involved in placing refugees into new homes. You'll also learn what the soccer team members in Outcasts United... have gone through and you'll come away with a better understanding of their lives.

Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta is a non-profit agency with a multi-lingual, multicultural staff that provides an entry into the American culture and continued services for hundreds of refugees each year. Working with the community, RRISA strives to improve the plight of displaced and uprooted people. RRISA answers the humanitarian call to serve those fleeing from persecution, war, famine and extreme poverty.

Author Shelia P. Moses Visits the Roswell Library Feb. 3rd!


National Book Award finalist Shelia P. Moses will visit the Roswell Library on Wednesday, February 3rd @ 4:30 p.m. Her children's book The Legend of Buddy Bush was named a Coretta Scott King Award Honor Book for 2005. Join us for a fun afternoon with this talented and prolific author.


This program is part of the Roswell Roots Celebration of African American History and the Atlanta Author Series sponsored by the Friends of the Roswell Library.

Roswell Reads - Photo Contest is Ongoing Until March 7th

ROSWELL READS 2010 presents a Photography Contest for all ages – kids, teens and adults!

Download a 2010 Roswell Reads Photo Contest Brochure (includes entry form) or pick one up at the Roswell Library. The entry deadline is March 7, 2010. This year's theme is: “Sports are ... ” Photos of the sports experience. Call the Roswell Library for more details: 770.640.3075. Some helpful information is listed below.

  • This year's theme is: "Sports are ..." Photos of the sports experience. The contest is open to photographers of all ages and skills. There are three levels: Child, Teen, Adult.
  • Judging criteria will include quality of work and cohesiveness of the show. Entries must be original and entirely the work of the entrant. Entries must not be copies or derivatives of published works, although they may have been shown previously.
  • Fill out an entry form. No entry fee is required. Up to two entries per person, 8 x 10 photographs, matted, and in an envelope. Place the completed and signed entry form in the envelope with the photographs.
  • Applications and photographs may be hand-delivered to: Roswell Library, 115 Norcross Street. Please call 770.640.3075 for directions.
  • The Deadline to enter is 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 7, 2010.
  • Please label the back of each photograph with 1) Title; 2) Arrow indicating the top of the photo and 3) The category (Adult, Teen, Child).
  • PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PHOTO. Your name goes only on the outside of the envelope.
  • Consideration for acceptance is not guaranteed for entries that do not include all required criteria.
  • Winning and selected photos will be exhibited at the library from March 13 - March 31, 2010.
  • All work must be picked up at the Roswell Library between April 1 and April 30, 2010.
  • Prizes will be awarded for each level (Child, Teen, Adult).

Free Tax Assistance on Mondays Through April 12th!

Free Tax Assistance will be offered on Mondays, February 1 - April 12 from 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Assistance is provided by trained AARP Tax-Aid volunteers. Volunteers will gladly assist anyone, with special attention given to those ages 60 and older. Please bring last year's tax returns and other important documents.
