Author Liz Kessler Visits the Roswell Library This Saturday!

Don't forget to join us this Saturday, September 4th @ 1:00 p.m. for a visit by Liz Kessler, author of Philippa Fisher's Fairy Godsister and the popular Emily Windsnap series.   This program is for ages 7-12.  Reservations began August 14th, but there is still room available.   Reservations may be made in person or over the phone by calling the Roswell Library at 770-640-3075.   Check out the author's cool website at www.lizkessler.co.uk.

September Highlights

The Roswell Library will be offering some fun programs this September.   In addition to the ever-popular story time programs, there will be a couple of author visits, book clubs for adults and children, a clean green workshop, a couple of classes on using library databases to help with homework and research papers, and .... 25 Books All Young Georgians Should Read

Last week, the GA Center for the Book released its list of 25 Books Every Young Georgian Should Read.  We're happy to see such a comprehensive list and thrilled to note that 5 of the authors have appeared at the Roswell Library in the last few years!  Are we spot on or what?  (Pardon our pat on our back.)  Shelia Moses, Evelyn Coleman, Carmen Deedy, and Ted Dunagan have hosted author readings at the library and Eric Litwin performed a music program.   If this isn't a good enough reason to become a member of the Friends of the Roswell Library, then we don't know what is.  Click the link above to take a look at the list!  And click here to learn more about joining the Friends of the Roswell Library - it's the best deal in town.

What Roswell's Book Clubs are Reading in September

Get your pencils ready!   Here's a list of books up for discussion in September at the Roswell Library.    Reservations are only required for the children's book clubs.   If you need a copy to read, just call the Roswell Library at 770-640-3075 and the book club-loving staff will be happy to help you.

Talk It Up Book Club for Ages 9-11
Monday, September 20 @ 6:30 p.m.  We’ll discuss The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.  Snacks will be provided.  Reservations begin August 30.

Noonday Nosh Book Club
Tuesday, September 21@ 12 noon
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  We're celebrating the book's 50th anniversary!

Reading Pals Book Club for children in 2nd and 3rd grade
Tuesday, September 21 @ 4:00 p.m.  Read any Geronimo Stilton book.  We'll discuss them and do an activity related to the books.  Reservations begin August 31.

Mystery Readers' Book Club
Tuesday, September 28 @ 6:30 p.m.
The Watchman by Robert Crais

K1 Book Club doesn't meet in September, but reservations will begin September 14 for the Tuesday, October 5 discussion @ 4:00 p.m.   K1 Book Club is a book discussion group for children in kindergarten and 1st grade.  At the meeting, everyone will read a book together and do activities related to the book.  No advance preparation is needed.

Family Pop Art Day at the Roswell Library

Artist Michael Albert will join us to talk about pop art and his book An Artist's America.  Each child will get the chance to make their own art project at the end of the presentation! Meet Carlen Heyward

Carlen Heyward, cousin of author Du Bose Heyward, will present a reading and book-signing of the children's book The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.  Saturday, August 28 @ 11:00 a.m.  This program is for ages 5 and up.

What's Happening at Fox Tales Book Shoppe?

Well, not to be outdone and always anxious to blow our own horn, the Friends are tickled to notice some interesting comparisons between us and the folks up in Woodstock.  Just so happens that Ted Dunagan, author of the popular teen novel Watermelon Man, will be at Fox Tales in September.  Been there, done that. Mr. Dunagan visited Roswell in 2009!  And, this September, author Liz Kessler will visit the Roswell Library and Fox Tales.  Hmmmmm.....  Great minds think alike.  Click here to visit Fox Tales' website to learn more.

Upcoming Book Festivals

Mark your calendars!  The AJC Decatur Book Festival is just around the corner, September 3rd - 5th.  As always, they have a great line-up of authors and entertainment.  Click here to learn more.

And if that's not enough to whet your appetite, the MJCCA Book Festival will be held in November.  This will be their 19th year of providing great authors and great discussions in the metro Atlanta area.  Festival dates are November  6th - 20th, 2010.  The MJCCA folks are top-drawer, as we say here in the South.   Wondering what MJCCA stands for?  It's the ever-fabulous Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta.  Click this link for an inside peek.

Friends' End of Summer Book Sale!

It's here!  After your Saturday morning coffee, head over to the Roswell Library for the Friends of the Roswell Library's End of the Summer Book Sale on Saturday, August 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The sale will feature a collection of history books, cookbooks and gardening books as well as current hardback novels priced at $1.00 and $2.00 each.   As always, the paperbacks and children’s books will be big sellers!

During the year, the Friends collect many books through the donations of our generous citizens. These books are sold on a regular basis at our bookstore off the Roswell Library lobby and at our scheduled book sales throughout the year.  All donations are tax deductible.

Author Joseph Gatins' Book Now Available as an E-Book

Local author Joseph Gatins' book We Were Dancing on a Volcano:  Bloodlines and Fault Lines of a Star-Crossed Atlanta Family: 1849 - 1989 is now available as an e-book!  Mr. Gatins visited the Roswell Library this past July as part of our Atlanta Authors Series.  He charmed the audience with tales of his family and some choice tidbits of Atlanta history.  To learn more, visit his blog at http://josephgatins.blogspot.com/

Learn all about the new process for downloading eBooks and eAudiobooks, as well as downloading the required software and getting your account set up. You must bring your own wireless-compatible laptop AND your library card.

Early Voting at the Roswell Library in Late October

The Roswell Library will once again serve as an early voting location for Fulton County in late October.  Details are still being finalized, but the library is currently rescheduling regularly scheduled programs normally held during the last two weeks of October.  This will include our popular story times.

Fall Story Time Schedule

Mark your calendars!  Story times at the Roswell Library will return in late September.  Here's a list of programs and times.  Please remember that the programs at Roswell are very popular and attendance is on a first come, first served basis.

Bouncing Babies Story Time
Mondays, September 20 – December 13.  10:30 a.m.
Bouncing Babies is a program for infants from birth to age one and their caregiver. No reservations required.  There will not be programs on October 11, October 18, October 25 or November 22.

Story Time for 4’s and 5’s
Mondays, September 20 – December 13.   4:00 p.m.
Story time for 4’s and 5’s is an independent story time experience that children attend without a caregiver.  Day care providers are asked to remain with their group. No reservations required.   There will not be programs on October 11, October 18, October 25 or November 22.

Walking One-ders Story Time
Wednesdays, September 22 – December 15.  10:30 a.m.
Walking One-ders is a program for one year olds who are walking and their caregiver. No reservations required.  There will not be programs on October 13, October 20, October 27 or November 24.

Terrific Twos and Threes Story Time
Wednesdays, September 22 – December 15.  11:30 a.m.
Terrific Twos is a program for two and three-year-olds and a caregiver. No reservations required. There will not be programs on October 13, October 20, October 27 or November 24.

Phllip DePoy ... Coming Soon!

The AJC gave local playwright Phillip Depoy's new play, Stealing Dixie, a great review in Monday's paper.  Click here to take a look and learn where you can buy tickets.   Performances are held at the Theatre in the Square in Marietta.

After you get a good dose of Southern charm, head over to the Roswell Library on Saturday, September 18th @ 2:00 p.m. for a visit by Mr. DePoy.  Not only is he a successful playwright, but he's a best-selling mystery novelist!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the November 13th visit by Amanda Gable, author of The Confederate General Rides North.  Wait a minute ....  Isn't Stealing Dixie about the Great Locomotive Race, involving the Confederate General?   Hmmmm ... just sayin' ....
