Veteran's Day

In observance of Veteran's Day, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will be closed.  To honor this day, here's a poem from World War I written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian doctor.  Many thanks to the men and women across time who have bravely fought in battle, to those who have lovingly tended the wounded, as well as to those who have kept the home-fires burning.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

Going On Now ... The Fabulous MJCCA Book Festival

Atlanta is a book-loving town and we are fortunate to have one of the country's premier book festivals in our own backyard.   The MJCCA Book Festival, known locally as the Jewish Book Festival, is always a treat.  Held annually in November, the folks at the MJCCA know how to put on a great festival, handle details like parking, and welcome one and all to their campus on Tilly Milly Road in Dunwoody.

This year's fest started on the 6th and continues until November 21st.   As usual, they've got a great line-up of authors that appeal to all ages and all tastes:   Pat Conroy, Gene Wilder, Naomi Ragen, Nicole Krauss, Yann Martel, Jeffrey Stepakoff,  Martin Fletcher, Sara Gruen, Joseph Skibell, Cathleen Schine, Rita Cosby, and plenty more.

Visit their website to learn more details.   You'll be glad you did!
