Tonight, the Georgia Center for the Book will announce its 2010 list of 25 authors every Georgian should read.  Hmmmm.  Who will be on it?  Flannery O'Connor?  Alice Walker?  Terry Kay?   Check back on Friday to find out whose books you should read this summer!  Of course, that's assuming you haven't already read them.

Upcoming Author Visits at the Carter Library

The Carter Library in Atlanta continues to host a variety of great authors.   In the better late than never department, there's still time to hear Mark Kurlansky tonight (4/26) talk about his newest book The Eastern Stars: How Baseball Changed the Dominican Town of San Pedro de MacorĂ­s.  If you aren't able to attend, you can place a hold on the book through the library systems' catalog.

Special Exhibit: Family Matters: Legacies of the Kings and Hembrees of Roswell, GA

In cooperation with the Roswell Historical Society, the library will host an exhibit throughout the month of May in observance of Heritage Days and Historic Preservation Month. Exhibit panels will include family photographs and descriptive text that shed light on the lives of several generations of two pioneer Roswell families who left their indelible mark on the community.

Members of the Roswell Historical Society will be available to answer questions about the exhibit, their research library and general questions about the organization. They will be available at the library on the following days:
  • Sunday, May 2 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Monday, May 3 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 7 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This Week @ the Roswell Library

Wondering what to do this week? For the week of April 26 - May 1, you'll find Story Time programs for all ages - this is the last week until summertime; a program on health for adults; a special showing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for teens; beginning May 1st, a special monthlong exhibit on Roswell history highlighting the legacies of the King and Hembree families; the Mystery Readers' Book Club; a Won Yoga class; a free harp concert presented by the North Atlanta Harp Ensemble; free ESL classes; and books for sale in the lobby and in the Friends' Book Corner.

For anyone interested in what the library will offer this summer, get your calendars ready!  Those smart and fun folks in the Children's Dept. have been working hard to provide our community with a fun-filled and creative summer.  Stay tuned for more details.

Free Concert Presented by the North Atlanta Harp Ensemble

Join us for an afternoon of gorgeous music at the Roswell Library.  The North Atlanta Harp Ensemble will present a concert Saturday, May 1st @ 4:00 p.m. in the library's meeting room.  Under the direction of Ellen Heinicke, this hard working group is dedicated to playing music that is uplifting and beautiful, thus enhancing the lives of those who listen.

Mystery Readers' Book Club Has a New Title for May

Due to a lack of available titles (which can also mean certain titles are very popular), the MRBC group has changed its selection for the May 25th discussion.  The author remains the same, but the selection will be The Hard Way instead of The Killing Floor by Lee Child.   Copies will be available for check-out soon (or if you like to read the selection early, just call the Roswell Library at 770-640-3075.)  The MRBC's May date is the 25th @ 6:30 p.m. 

A reminder about next week's meeting (April 27th) will be posted in the morning.

Noonday Nosh Book Club Meets Tuesday, April 20th

Reminder: Talk It Up Book Club Meets Next Monday

Spring Book Sale This Weekend

The Friends of the Roswell Library will hold their annual Spring Book Sale on Saturday, April 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Members of the Roswell Friends are invited to a Preview Party on Friday, April 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  New members may join the Friends of the Roswell Library at the door.

There will be an interesting collection of Art Books for sale and numerous cookbooks for all types of cooking, as well as books on history, business and politics.  Small paperback fiction will be sold at 50 cents each or three for $1.00.  A large collection of classic children books are a true bargain.  The Friends Book Store and our book sales are known for the lowest prices in town.

Come browse, meet your neighbors, shop and support your local library.  All proceeds are used for special programs at the Roswell Library such as the Summer Reading Program, Roswell Reads and other needed purchases for the library.  Our city and surrounding communities benefit from and appreciate your support.

The American Library Association's website says it best:  "Libraries are the heart of their communities."  Yes, indeed!  Where can you get a book or movie for free, use the computer to print out a plane ticket's boarding pass, type a resume, send an e-mail to a friend AND read the New York Times?  The Library!

This year's theme is Communities Thrive @ Your Library.  Here are some dates to keep in mind:
  • April is School Library Month
  • Monday, April 12 - "The State of America's Libraries" report will be released.
  • Tuesday, April 13 - Celebrate ALA-APA's National Library Workers Day
  • Wednesday, April 14 - Celebrate the first annual National Bookmobile Day

Cool Art on Display in the Children's Department

The Children's Department at the Roswell Library is featuring a display of the most gorgeous art by students at the Porter Academy.  Still life paintings of flowers in vases will lift your heart and make you smile!  The next time you're in the library, walk down to the Children's area and take a look for yourself.  You'll walk away smiling.

This Week @ the Roswell Library

Wondering what to do for spring break? For the week of April 5 - April 10,  you'll find some exciting programs for all ages!

For spring break week, the library is offering a special Mingle Chinese Academy class for ages 2 - 6 and a movie time for ages 6 - 10 featuring the ever-popular Tale of Despereaux; a drama class on none-other-than-William Shakespeare for teens featuring the fun and fabulous North Fulton Drama Club; and a special TGIF movie for teens featuring Star Trek.

Lest adults feel left out, the Friends are sponsoring an author visit on the 10th with best-selling southern author Mary Kay Andrews.  A selections of her books is on display at the library (and are available for check-out). 

Our regular adult programs won't take a spring break because, well, adults don't spend all of their free time doing homework!  Look for free Tax Assistance;  a Won Yoga class;  ESL classes;  and books for sale in the lobby and in the Friends' Book Corner.
