Wondering what to do this week?    For the week of January 31 - February 5, you'll find a couple of special programs for teens - a seminar on how to get a spring break or summer job and a book discussion for middle-schoolers on Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett.   ESL classes continue and there are always books for sale in the lobby and in the Friends' bookstore.

Roswell Roots Programs @ the Roswell Library

Make History, Oral History
Wednesday, January 26.  4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Learn to ask the right questions that reveal stories of loved ones who are everyday history makers.  Presented by NPR’s StoryCorps team that will be at the Roswell branch in February.  Ages 11 and up.  Reservations required.   For more  information and reservations call 770-640-3075 or email margaret.eves@fultoncountyga.gov.

Mama Koku
Monday, February 7.  6:45 p.m.

Ages 6-10.  Registration begins January 18.

Join us for fun and interactive stories told by Mama Koku, a nationally recognized storyteller affiliated with the National Association of Black Storytellers and the Southern Order of Storytellers.   She will share African-American folktales appropriate for the whole family.

Rebecca Burns Discusses Burial For a King
Saturday, February 12. 1:00 p.m.
Meet author and former Atlanta Magazine editor who will discuss her book, Burial for a King: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Funeral and the Week that Transformed Atlanta and Rocked the Nation.  The book encapsulates King’s legacy, America’s shifting attitude toward race, and the emergence of Atlanta as a new kind of southern city.  Reservations required. 

Meet the Author: Melody McCloud

Saturday, February 19.  2:00 p.m.

Dr. McCloud will discuss her new book Living Well, Despite Catchin’ Hell: The Black Woman’s Guide to Health, Sex and Happiness.  As stated on the back cover, it is “medical advice ...  dashes of pop culture and hefty doses of personal responsibility.”   Foreword by Denzel Washington’s wife, Pauletta.

StoryCorps Recording Booth
Saturday, February 26.  10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Teens!  Be a part of the movement to document the stories of Roswell’s African-American history. Interview your relative or neighbor so their story will be archived in the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture.  Walk out with a CD of your interview.  Ages 11 and up.  Limited number of 1-hour appointments available.  Parent permission slip and reservations required.   For more information and reservations call 770-640-3075 or email margaret.eves@fultoncountyga.gov.

Book Clubs for Kids

The Roswell Library is offering another round of great book discussions for children.   Here's a list of February meetings.  Reservations are required and may be made in person or over the phone by calling the Roswell Library at 770-640-3075.

K1 Book Club (Kindergarten and 1st Grade)
Tuesday, February 8.  4:00 p.m.
No advance preparation is needed.   Just show up and have fun discussing a book selected by one of our super-cool librarians.

Talk It Up Book Club (Ages 9 - 11)
Tuesday, February 15.   4:00 p.m.
Turn Homeward, Hannalee by Patricia Beatty
Summary:   Twelve-year-old Hannalee Reed, forced to relocate to Indiana along with other Georgia millworkers during the Civil War, leaves her mother with a promise to return home as soon as the war ends.

Reading Pals Book Club (2nd and 3rd Graders)
Tuesday, February 22.  4:00 p.m.
Horrible Harry Goes Cuckoo by Suzy Kline
Summary:   While Harry's third-grade class is studying birds, the cold winter weather keeps them cooped up inside during recess and Harry gets restless.

StoryCorps at the Roswell Library

As part of our participation with the wonderful Roswell Roots celebration of African American history in Roswell, the Roswell Library is pleased to offer a program in cooperation with NPR's StoryCorps:  Make History, Oral History on Wednesday, January 26 @ 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Learn to ask the right questions that reveal stories of loved ones who are everyday history makers.  Presented by NPR’s StoryCorps team that will be at the Roswell Branch February 26 from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m..  Ages 11 and up.  Reservations are required.

Roswell Reads Photo Contest!

Applications for this year's photo contest are now available.   You can download a copy on the Friends' website:  http://forl.net/roswellreads.htm or pick up one at the Roswell Library.   This year's theme is Follow Your Dreams.   Folks who have read the Roswell Reads selection, My Name Is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, know that Mary's dream is to be a surgeon - not an easy dream for a young woman in the 19th century.  More details are listed in the brochure, which includes an application.

Wondering what to do this week?    For the week of January 24 - January 30, you'll find a special program for parents and teens about how to navigate safely through the web's social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.   The Mystery Readers' Book Club will meet on Tuesday to discuss Endangered Species by Nevada Barr.  ESL classes continue and there are always books for sale in the lobby and in the Friends' bookstore.

New Date Announced for the Teen Boss Workshop

The Teen Boss Workshop has been rescheduled from earlier this month to February 1st @ 4:00 p.m. at the Roswell Library.   As the flyer says "Get a jump start on your spring break and summer jobs by creating your OWN job! Way more than advice on grass cutting and babysitting, this workshop encourages creativity, and gives good solid business information from pricing and profits to customer service and marketing to licenses and taxes."  Please call the Roswell Library at 770-640-3075 for more information and to make a reservation!

This Week at the Roswell Library

Wondering what to do this week?    For the week of January 17 - January 22, you'll find a quiet week at the library as we recover from a week of torturous weather conditions.   Snow is pretty to look at, but ice is dangerous thing.

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will be closed Monday, January 17th, in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  

The teen business workshop originally scheduled for last Monday will be rescheduled.  Check back soon for more details.   Noonday Nosh meets this Tuesday @ noon to discuss Ron Hall's Same Kind of Different as Me.  ESL classes continue and there are always books for sale in the lobby and in the Friends' bookstore.

Southern Authors Featured in Vanity Fair Magazine

Thanks to blog follower AC for alerting us to the piece in today's AJC.   Jennifer Brett reports in The Buzz that February's issue of Vanity Fair magazine features a spotlight on southern authors Kathryn Stockett, Susan Rebecca White, Karin Slaughter, Amanda Gable, Sheri Joseph, Joshilyn Jackson, Natasha Trethewey, Emily Giffin, Jessica Handler.   Fans of the Friends will note that a few of these authors have made appearances at the Roswell Library, courtesy of the Friends and its Atlanta Author Series.   Click here to read The Buzz online.   If you are lucky enough to have had a newspaper delivered to you during the icy mess in metro Atlanta, lucky you indeed!

You have one week left to read the January 18th selection for our Noonday Nosh Book Club:  Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall.   There are still a few copies available on the Nosh table, near the Reference Desk at the Roswell Library.   We'll see you next Tuesday at 12 noon.

The mid-winter meeting of the American Library Association is always exciting because that's when they announce the Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King Award winners and honorees (plus other highly prestigious awards).  Click here to take a look at the news release:  2011 Awards.  

Book Discussions for Roswell Reads

Have you finished this year's Roswell Reads selection My Name Is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira?  This intriguing glimpse into Civil War life told from a northern point of view is chock-full of discussion topics.  Here's a list of book discussions built around the book, including the Mystery Readers' Book Club which will read a mystery set during the Civil War.  No reservations are required for any of these book discussions, and everyone is welcome to attend (these book discussions will be held at the Roswell Library).  

Copies of the book have been purchased by the Friends of the Roswell Library and are available for check-out.  The Reference Department has created a great display that includes plenty of copies of My Name Is Mary Sutter, as well as lots of books about Atlanta, Roswell, and the Civil War.
