In Memoriam: Author and Poet Lucille Clifton

Sad news to report today:  author and poet Lucille Clifton passed away Saturday, 13 February.  She was 73 years old and had recently been in the hospital.  Formerly the Poet Laureate of Maryland - and the first African American woman to do so, a National Book Award winner and a recipient of  prestigious Ruth Lilly Prize for lifetime achievement by the Poetry Foundation,  Ms. Clifton wrote a wonderful series of children's book about Everett Anderson.  Her poetry and literature will be greatly missed.   Please visit the links below to learn more about this great African American writer and why she is so beloved.

Atlantans will welcome the news that Ms. Clifton's archives at Emory University will now be open to the public.   Photo courtesy of Mark Lennihan/Associated Press.
